How to Pay NSSF using MPESA

This article explains how to pay NSSF using MPESA. The National Social Security Fund (NSSF) is a Kenyan government agency responsible for the collection, safekeeping, responsible investment and distribution of retirement funds of employees in both the formal and informal sectors of the Kenyan Economy.

Participation for both employers and employees is compulsory. However, self-employed people are not compelled to be members even though you are allowed to if you want. The agency entered an agreement with telco giant Safaricom in adopting a cashless system.

Steps to pay NSSF by MPESA

You can complete any other remissions apart from the monthly contributions. Below is how to make the payments. The NSSF Paybill number is 333300.

You must be a registered member of the NSSF. You can register at any branch countrywide or through the NSSF App, and get an NSSF number.

  1. Go to your MPESA menu
  2. Select Lipa na MPESA Paybill option
  3. Enter NSSF Paybill Number 333300
  4. Under Account number, enter your NSSF number
  5. Press send and wait for confirmation

How employers can remit NSSF via MPESA

Only employers with 20 or less employees can pay NSSF using MPESA in Kenya. The process is simple:

  1. Upload your payroll data to the NSSF portal
  2. A Unique Payment Number (UPN) will be generated for you
  3. Go to your MPESA menu
  4. Go to the Lipa na MPESA and select Paybill option
  5. Under the Business Number, enter NSSF Paybill number 333300
  6. Under Account number, enter your Unique Payment Number (UPN)
  7. Enter amount to pay, which is the total amount for all your employees
  8. Press send and wait for confirmation

How to register and track your NSSF contributions

Go to Google Play Store and download the NSSF App. When you open the app, you will be guided on where to click. If you want to register as a new member, click on the Register button. If you are an old member, you can use your NSSF number to track you contributions once you log in.

NSSF is working towards ensuring all returns are made online and you will not have to go to an office.
