KEBS list of banned second hand car spare parts

banned second hand spares Kenya

The Kenya Bureau of Standards (KEBS) released a clarification statement on the issue of banned spare part imports in Kenya. Media reports had indicated that the standards watchdog had banned all importation of used spare parts. However, the watchdog said that according to the KS 2190:2013 Kenya Standard on Motor vehicle used spare parts – Code of practice, there is acceptable criteria for acceptance of used car parts.

KEBS therefore said that considering the impact of use of such spare parts on the overall safety of a vehicle, importing some second hand motor vehicle parts in loose form is prohibited. Here is the list of second hand spare parts banned by KEBS:

  • Tyres
  • Tubes
  • Ball joints
  • Tie rod-ends
  • Rack-ends
  • Brake hosepipes
  • Brake pipes
  • Brake and clutch cables
  • Bearings
  • Rubber bushes
  • Oil seals
  • Spark plugs
  • Filters
  • Air cleaner elements
  • Clutch plates
  • Pressure plates
  • Release bearings
  • Brake pads

KEBS also said that it was its duty to inspect and ratify the quality of all motor vehicle parts according to the Code which was ratified after public participation. However, the standard does not apply to spare parts used on agricultural implements and tractors, earth movers, forestry tractors and other agricultural machinery.
