Kenyan tech giant Safaricom has introduced an online portal where you can apply for short term Paybill numbers. The new portal comes as a respite for applicants who would have otherwise physically visit a customer care centre to secure an MPESA Paybill.

What is a Paybill number?

An MPESA Paybill number is an account that enables you fundraise or receive payment using mobile money. There are two types of Paybill numbers.


MPESA Paybill account

MPESA Paybill account or number is a long-term number which is mostly used by businesses and organisations to receive mobile money payments. Once you have one, you can use it for as long as you want. The requirements for getting this account depends on the type of your institution or organization. Safaricom has divided clients into the following categories:

Short term MPESA Paybill number

Short term MPESA Paybill number is an account that is used to collect money within a specific period. There are three time periods to choose from: 1 month, 3 months, and 6 months. That means when that time lapses, the account is locked. There are five categories to choose from for this type of account:

Requirements for MPESA Paybill number for medical fund

1. Certified documents (Hospital admission form)

2. Copy of ID of Applicant

3. If minor, attach birth certificate / affidavit

4. Letter from the bank or cancelled cheque

1. Copy of ID of Applicant

2. Institution admission letter

3. Letter from the bank or cancelled cheque

What you require for MPESA paybill for funeral fund

1. Copy of burial permit / death certificate

2. Copy of ID of Applicant

Requirements for MPESA Paybill for wedding fund

1. Copy of ID for the couple

2. Letter from couple in case it’s a traditional wedding

3. Letter from the bank or cancelled cheque

4. Letter from the institution wedding the couple

1. Cover letter from committee signed by two authorised signatories stating purpose of the account

2. Letter / Email from bank showing account has been set up for intended purpose

For all the options, you must have a bank account. When the Paybill lapses and the mobile money account is closed, all the monies are deposited into your nominated bank account. Make sure you have all the above documents in soft copy (either as scans or pictures) as you are required to attach them during the online MPESA paybill application process.
